del.icio.us gets AJAX (live suggestions for the folksonomy)

Technically interesting….? yes, but it may produce a more coherent “folksonomy” by making suggestions as people are typing a tag to describe the link they are posting.

BTW http://del.icio.us is a social bookmark management tool that has pioneered many of the techniques used by flickr.com, upcoming.org and other social software plays. Also one of the most fun uses of the .us domain.

And in the spirit of shareing here’s my del.icio.us page http://del.icio.us/mrkook that also come as an rss feed:http://del.icio.us/rss/mrkook

  1. After using the new AJAX service a few times when I post, I notice two effects on my experience of using del.icio.us:

    1) As I type, I’m more likely to select a word that isn’t exactly appropriate… to reduce typing.
    2) As I decide what to type, I’m more likely to guess at words that I think may have been used before… also to reduce typing.

The unintended net effect of this may be to pigeon-hole my posts into a less nuanced set of tags over time. On a mass scale, “a more coherent folksonomy” may increase the efficiency of categorizing items, but reduce the findability of those items by pigeon-holing them into categories that don’t quite fit.

Very good point, and one that I was debating about when i made the post :-) Quite a few people have made the critisism of folksonomies and the oft related tag clouds, that popularity ends up skewing the usefulness of results. One thing I found was that I felt more encouraged to add tags, although, clearly influenced by the suggestions. The benefit I saw, and the reason I said it might lead to more coherent folksonomies was that it may reduce the number of simalies in the system ie. “blog” blogging” “blogs”. I guess what really matters is how delicious can capitalize on all this co-created data to provide more value.
