What Is Innovation?

by Karl on August 15, 2007

Greg Verdino has been rallying some blog friends to weigh in on a survey on the topic of innovation. Jon Burg from Digitas asks the question “What is a one line definition of Innovation”.

This is my stab at it, borrowing heavily from the definition of creativity:

“innovation is the process or result of combining previously separate ideas or technologies in useful and valuable ways.”

What do you think? What does this overused word mean to you?

Jon’s going to post a summary on monday so look out for it.

I like it very much. All the important bits (”process or result”) and pieces (”in useful and valuable ways”) are there.

There was only one thing that I wasn’t fully comfortable with:

> of combining previously separate ideas or technologies

Yes, the vast majority of innovations is about combining previously separate ideas or technologies. But are you ruling out the possibility of creating *totally new* ideas or technologies? Of course, this doesn’t happen often, but I would like to leave it a fighting chance in your definition :)
